Improving student and Instructor experience

Project Overview
ADI Hubb is the number one downloaded driving instructor-student-oriented app in the UK.. This mobile app was originally designed to help new drivers study for their theory tests and watch instructional videos. However, user feedback revealed critical pain points, especially around finding the right driving instructor and building an effective student-instructor relationship.
Duration : 2 Months (2024)
My Role
The Problem
For new drivers, the learning process is often filled with anxiety and uncertainty.

User Research Highlights
I interviewed 5 students about their driving lesson experiences and listened to their process of trying to find a driving instructor. I also spoke with 5 instructors about their experiences with students. I gathered insights on the lesson process and students’ expectations regarding driving education, and some key findings emerged from these conversations.
Insights gathered from students:
“I couldn't fully understand some things because of the language barrier. I relied more on the videos.”
“It was almost impossible to find a female instructor.”
“There was no way to compare instructors. They all looked the same in the app.”
“I never thought about how the lesson went.”
Instructors
“I’ve recently created a new profile and just registered on the platform. I’d like to offer students attractive deals to become more recognized in the area. What can I do to increase my visibility?
I take notes about the student’s learning process at the end of each lesson so I don’t forget any details. However, the notes sometimes get mixed up and become hard to organize. I also find myself wondering about the student’s thoughts on their last lesson.
Solutions (Personalized Instructor Filtering)
We introduced filters that allow students to search for instructors based on their preferences:
Gender
Spoken languages
Transmission type

Searching page before update

Improved searching criteria
This significantly improved the comfort and trust levels between students and instructors, especially for learners with cultural or psychological sensitivities.
Instructor Side Solutions
We’ve updated the instructor search-result panel. We added sections where instructors can introduce themselves and panels that can influence students’ decision-making. These panels are as follows:

Result cards before improvement

After Update
Reflective Logs Feature (Instructor + Student side)
We added logs that allow instructors to quickly record key points after a lesson. These logs were designed based on discussions with instructors and tailored to the needs identified during those interviews. The critical notes entered will also be reflected in the student’s panel.
In addition, a panel was added where students can log their own reflections about the lesson they attended. This allows students to add the areas they felt they were lacking after the lesson, without forgetting them due to stress during the lesson.

Design Outcomes
The daily usage frequency of the new features was measured, and the prior user testing increased the app’s usage frequency by 60%.
